I am entralled by this wooden statue of Guan Yin within a grotto, carved elm and painted with color including gold that has mostly flecked off.
Guan Yin is on a grotto throne and cushion type base. We estimate this piece to be 120 to 200 years old. Much of the paint which was white, cream and some red has peeled or faded. One leg of the custion stool is broken and the base has a crack On the rear of the throne cover is an indented insect mark which I find totally fasinating. Her rear robe at is of a paper type or papyrus which has peeled partly back.
Considering her age this piece is in good condition and all features are totally evident including her hands and face. Note what I think is a bird on one corner and a bottle on the other.
Believe me -- this piece has a strong presence with many persons in our store finding it totally fascinating, therefore, I have had to keep it in a case so it is not overly handled.
Figures of deities like this were placed in household shrines in China. I doubt you could bring one out of China today.
